Friday night represented the 6th annual Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards and Prosper st Productions was there. Some prevalent aboriginal musical talent from the late 70′s to early 80′s legend C-Weed to upcoming talentuous Ali Fontaine who performed her single and traditional Pow Wow dancers and singers/ drummers. Ali Fontaine, from Sagkeeng started the show in beauty with her soft but strong voice to move on to win not one but two times in both the Best Country CD and Best New Artist categories. This is great news for a community that suffered great lost and tragedy in the last few weeks. She made them proud. Our thoughts are with their families. I also got to enjoy some French in the mix with the popular Québec band Florent Vollant. At the end of the night, it was a job well done from the organizers.
Saturday night, in a church on Albert street, Caillou hosted a fund raiser for the Dream Room project: A charity chaired by Wanda Luna from Estudio Luna on McDermot avenue, who gathers artists and hands on trade people to remodel rooms and paint murals in the rooms of children with critical illness, or other physical and mental disorders. We believe so much in the charity that our very own Frank O’Phone is part of the council. It was a great success with an attendance of just over a hundred. Wonderful food from Caillou’s mother recipe book including a tasty shrimp soup served in a champagne glass was a delight as we enjoyed a little bit of Latin jazz from Marco Castillo. Also present, an art auction from local talented artists including our own photographer, miss Brit Mc who explained to me the process of using nailpolish to superpose two pictures, our past featured artist Jacobus V. Houdt who I must say impressed me with the new sense of depth in his painting. Keep it up Jacobus, you are getting there! And let’s not forget our friend from the Warehouse, Amber Solstice! Her ingenious art piece not only gave me tremors but showed me how to dream with my eyes closed. Wait, maybe I’m still staring!
Thank you!
